Visa4UK questions...

Post by abbcha » Fri Jul 08, 2016 3:25 pm

I'm a British citizen (by descent) and have a UK passport, and have been living/working in the UK for just over 6 months now, flying back and forth to the US, where my wife and three young children (4, 2, 1) are.

My wife is an adjunct professor and just finished up the semester in the US... they're all over in London visiting now, for about three weeks so far, just as Americans/no official visa other than the "hello, here's 6 months, don't work" stamp.

My wife hasn't spent much time in London/the UK in the past, but the past few weeks have gone well, so we're thinking, great, let's get visas and have them join me, rather than me flying back and forth, and all the craziness that goes along with that.

My wife and children are eligible for EU citizenship, but the application process for it would (a) take a long time, and then (b) with Brexit whether it would work for the UK longer term is slightly uncertain. So thinking that we'll have to get official UK visas for them.

I'm on an £80k pa contract and have been for just over 6 months now, so no problems with the financial requirements... but was looking at visas and the Visa4UK website, and it's both straightforward and confusing at the same time. Was hoping some people here could help clarify for me...

I was thinking rather than flying back to the US in the middle of the summer, and applying from there, to go visit Ireland for a few weeks with the wife/kids. It's a cheap flight from London, and that way if I need to come back myself for a meeting, I'm an hour/cheap flight away. Is that a problem, or a non-issue, to apply online and then do the UK visa process in Ireland?

And then looking on the Visa4UK website... for my wife the visa would be "Reason for Visit: Settlement" and "Visa Type: Settlement" and then "Visa Sub Type: Wife" ... is that correct? And for each of our three children I'd also create an application, but the "Visa Sub Type:" would be "Child or Other Dependant of Settled Person". Correct?

And then the other question I had right now, is if anyone has any recent experience with applying from Dublin/Ireland? It looks like most settlement visas from Dublin are processed in 10-15 days, at least for the online/April data. Is it generally pretty quick?

Also bear in mind that in addition to the visa fees they will each have to pay £600 NHS surcharge online before submitting the applications.
