ILR re-entry into UK for wife

Post by Bad Robot » Sat Aug 06, 2016 2:07 pm

Is it possible that my wife could face problems re-entering the country? She got her ILR visa as a spouse to a British Citizen (me) - and we have a child together, so it would need to be a serious breach in the laws for her to be refused re-entry I assume?

I have no reason to think that she would be stopped from re-entering, but I am anxious because she will be travelling alone for the first time.

Even with valid ILR, warn wife to be prepared for and expect questions.
My wife was always being stopped and questioned on re-entry, sometimes quite intrusively, when she travelled home on annual family visits.
All par for the course I know but upsetting for a shy person especially when new to our ways.

My husband experienced the same.

Yes, that's what I have warned her. She will be away for 18 days only.

She arrived on a Spouse visa - did they just ask questions on family life or did they delve into other matters?

As far as my husband was concerned they asked basic questions...how did he get his ILR, where does he work, live etc. On the first occasion soon after being granted ILR they kept him waiting while they checked the validity of his visa on the system.

That's not too bad, although to meet the new rules, we have to get a BPR card for her employment. I have filled in the NTL form ready for when she comes back. I am always anxious about immigration - I get a little paranoid thinking about it.

I wouldn't be overly worried, just be aware that there will be questions and she'll be fine.

My experience when re-entering over the 3 years I was on ILR was similar to what Casa has mentioned, pretty straight forward questions, and quite consistent each time I travelled.

The questions do generally follow-on
from how previous questions are answered. Another normal question is where you are travelling in from. Questions tend to be more intrusive while entering on limited time visas when compared to ILR.

Questions such as:
Travelling to/from where?
What for?
Where is husband (!!)
Why travelling alone?
How much money on her person?

Just tell her to expect routine questions and to answer honestly.

As to why travelling alone "my husband only gets five weeks vacation a year and does want to spend three of those weeks with my mother" would probably convince most IOs.

My wife figured out her own answers; just a little taken aback dealing with an 'authority figure';
(cultural difference).
