Visa for partner for birth of our baby

Post by CDK » Thu Oct 06, 2016 4:03 pm

Hello all,

Apologies in advance, this question has probably been exhausted already.

I was wondering if you can help.

I am British but I work in Uganda, East Africa with intermittent trips back to the UK for holiday periods and family visits. My partner is Ugandan, based in Uganda but works in and around East Africa (pilot). We have been married for 2 1/2 years. I am now pregnant with our first child and I would like to have the baby in my home country (UK).

I am wondering what the best way to go about this with regards to visas? My partner will eventually apply to work in the UK once he has completed the requirements for his license to fly in the UK. For now though, as we both work in EA, myself and my partner will need to go back to Uganda after 6 months to work after the baby is born.

My question is, is it best for him to apply for a family visa or just the standard 6 months visa so he is present for the birth and apply for the family visa at a later date. Or is it best for him to apply for the family visa now, at once, rather than coming as a visitor and then applying for a family visa.

I really hope that makes sense! If anyone has any guidance, I'd greatly appreciate it!

How often do you return to the UK and for how long each time?

As a non resident and not 'habitually resident' in the UK, you might not qualify immediately for free NHS use.

I come back to the UK every 6 months. I do still qualify for NHS and have done for the last 6 years I've been working in EA.

Just to add, will most likely be going private for the baby anyway - due to various reasons.

As a matter of interest are you tax resident in UK and if not have you voluntarily been paying your NI stamp?
