ILR Spouse 5 Years Route - Absence

I would be very thankful If someone can advise me about my case. I came to the UK in September 2013 on a spouse visa, 5 years route. My spouse is a British citizen. I renewed my Leave to remain in May 2016 and will be eligible for ILR in December 2018. I will be working in the USA from 28th of Septembre 2016 till 15th of June 2017. My wife is with me during my stay in the USA. I would like to know what should I do and avoid in order to remain eligible for ILR. Should my wife stay with me here or return to the UK? Do I need to visit the UK in the middle of this absence as I am worried if I stay the whole 9 months out of the UK I would be ineligible? Thanks in advance.
