Thanks for your posts, these are very helpful! I have the exact same issue as you and would be very grateful if you could please help. I was a student from Sep 2010 until July 2011 and I was issued a Yellow card in May 2011. I then obtained the Blue card in July 2011.
The problem I have is the the Home Office have kept the Yellow card when they issued the Blue card. Can you please confirm that this will not be an issue?
Also, should I send the original (or copy of) Blue card?

I was issued a BR1 Yellow Student Registration Certificate in April
2011 (attached to this application is the Home Office approval letter,
ref XXXXXXXX). This BR1 certificate was kept by Home Office when I
applied for a BR2 Blue certificate, granted in March 2013 (both BR2
cert. and approval letter are attached). I trust this is conclusive
evidence that I was issued a registration certificate on the basis of
being a student in the UK before June 2011 and therefore I do not need
to provide evidence of CSI with this application.

Hi @salis,

This is standard practice, yes. They would have returned your yellow card only if your blue card application was refused. Should you apply for DCPR and your application is successful they will keep your blue card too. They do, however, retain full record of your previous applications and their outcomes so that's not a problem.

As to whether you should send your blue card the answer is yes, you should.

Also, how do I determine which documents I should send as originals or as copies?
E.g. I will send the original Blue card (BR2), but I doubt I need to send original employment contracts, rent contracts and utility bills?

As @noajthan mentioned, best look at the EEA/PR guidance notes where it should tell you the most up to date requirements. However, from my personal experience previously, UKVI will require originals of all supporting documents including employment agreements and tenancy contracts, unless you have valid reason not to send the original (or if you simply don't have it).

If, for whatever reason, you can't send originals of certain supporting documents I suggest you explain why in a covering letter (they do read it). It will also help speed up your application as they won't have to be in touch with you to to request the originals.

That said, any form of ID that you supply absolutely must be the original.

They will take a copy if they need to and all supporting documents will be returned to you regardless of the outcome of your application, so no need to worry about that.
