How to choose a legal advisor?

Post by ijjlian » Tue Nov 22, 2016 10:14 pm

Hello all,

I ttihnk it is not allowed to recommend a specific advisor in this ofrum but can we discuss how to choose a legal advisor that is well informed and experienced EEA cases?

Are there any websites that one can learn from?

I contacted a few solicitors but did not get any trusting relationship until now. I felt like they either ask money upfron before one even knows about their experience OR they try to scare you into taking a costly route.

I would be grateful if you could share experience and insight.

Provided that firms of solicitors are not named and individual are not mentioned, I will be happy with this thread, even though I am yet to be convinced it is appropriate for this section.

If firms were to be name I will be force to delete all posts.

I am prefectly fine with firms not being named. I would be really indebted if people can give some strategy in choosing an advisor.

I do not know anyone personally who has a similar immigration situation as me (i.e. spouse of EEA), therefore a good approach to identifying one would be really helpful.

I think a good way to test the water with things like this is to ask them a question which they should know the answer to. If they immediately get it right (with confidence), they probably know what they are doing.

We have seen cases on this forum of "immigration solicitors" who have submitted applications on behalf of their clients which have zero chance of success. Those are the kinds of companies you need to avoid.

Thanks for input ohara.

Most cases the soliciotrs ask for an upfront colsultation fee. Is this common practice or can I find good ones that have free first consultation to be able to judge their knowledge?

I have been quoted quite high amounts for them to "take a look" and talk through my options.
