I was born in America before 2006 but after 1983. I am over 18.
My dad is English. He was born in England to English parents but they immigrated to the U.S. when he was 12 and he eventually gained dual citizenship, UK/US.
He and my mother were not married when I was born and never married.
In fact, she was married (albeit separated) to someone else, so her then-husband's name is on my birth certificate. In America, that makes her then-husband my legal father.
DNA testing has been done that confirms my biological father is English.
I was 24 when the law changed in 2015 to allow illegitimate children born before 2006 to apply, so I don't think I could have applied before I turned 18.
Can I apply for British citizenship by descent now, under these circumstances?
I have been married to an American machinist for 9 years and have 3 American children aged 5 and under, so I doubt that I will actually move there any time soon, as it would be difficult to get them all visas. However, it would mean a lot to me to be registered, if possible.
I have heard that I would have had to register before my 18th birthday and I have heard that having someone else on my birth certificate could complicate matters, so here I am.
Thank you in advance.
