I called the UKVI contact centre on 8 July and was told it would take up to 15 days for them to get back with regard to the "escalation"... so just more waiting!

Decision email/letter received: Approved on 6 August
N.B. after over a month's delay and multiple emails chasing/pleading, MP Siddiq's office contacted UKVI and tracked down my application. The delay was caused by a "technical issue". For anyone in a similar unlucky situation, contacting MP is probably the most effective route! My two costly phone calls escalating via UKVI went nowhere...
