Spouse Visa Extension 10 year route

Hi

I also need help regarding 10 year route. My partner was put on 10 yr route in feb 2015. It is time for his 2nd extension which is due in aug 2017. I wanted to know can i apply for extension now or can i only apply 28 days before.
Also what document do ineed 2 send off as first application was done by lawyer and a lil confused.
