What date does your son's passport expire?
Char (CR001 not Casa)

UKVI is supposed to have issued the dependant pass with the same 3 yr 4 month validity.
The same thing happened to me with my wife having got only 3 years. In fact I was lucky we spotted it - the only reason being her passport was up for renewal and the consular office made a remark to her about the visa expiry. I had to renew her visa for 4 months and then apply for extension together later.
Try writing to UKVI and see if they would extend your son's visa without the formal process.
By the way, it did not seem to have anything to do with passport expiry as the visa expiry was after the passport expiry anyway
