UKF Application to Register Child Under 18 as British Citizen

Hello all,

My younger brother (17 years old) was born to a British father and Finnish mother in Finland. Mother and father were divorced at the time. As far as I can determine the correct form for my brother to apply for British citizenship is the UKF form as he was born before 2006 to unmarried parents. I'm not sure, however, if the UKF form is applicable to children. Also the fee for an adult using the UKF form is only £80, but there is no mention of what it is for a child. This makes me wonder whether child applicants must use the MN1 form, which is much more expensive.

If anyone has some insight into this situation, any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Form UKF can be used by any person who meets the requirements. They need not be an adult, but if a minor, the form must be signed by the parents/guardian.

This guide is for adults (18 or over) or parents/guardians completing the form on behalf of a child under 18. References to ‘you’ refer to the applicant, unless otherwise stated.

Your brother should be eligible to apply under form UKF.

It is an interesting question. Technically, the Form UKF is free. The £80 are for the citizenship ceremony. however, a minor does not need to undergo a citizenship ceremony. Therefore, the Form UKF application for a minor applicant would be free.

However, given that your brother is 17, there is a good chance that the application would be decided after his 18th birthday, in which case he does need to attend a citizenship ceremony.

I would say that the best course of action for your brother and you to take would be to apply with Form UKF and pay the £80. If the registration certificate is issued before his 18th birthday, I think you can then ask for a refund.
