Tier2 visa - same company same project - should I reapply?

I was working as a post-doctoral researcher in the UK under a Tier 2 visa. Then I resigned my job and returned to my home country. About a year later, I am now planning to go to the UK and rejoin with the same job. Should I apply for a visa again?

I have a residence permit, which will expire in May 2018. However I can return home before that.

Yes, you'll have to. When you resigned your company would have notified Home office and they would sent the curtailment letter to your address.

They will need to do RLMT , get Unrestrict COS and ssign to you. You'll apply for Tier 2 which means your clock has reset and now you will need to complete 5 years to be relibgile for ILR

*If company didn't notify home office to curtail your leave and if you apply they might be in trouble as its one of the duties of the sponsr. This can lead to their license revoked
