ESTA - Rejection, chances of using ESTA again?

Hi there

I am in a situation where I left the US 4 yrs ago (I was a green card holder). I went to go back last year for a holiday but was rejected my ESTA. Unbeknown to me, I needed to file for GReen card abandonment (I-407). I am now doing this, I guess my question is, once I change my status am I likely to still be eligible for an ESTA. I ask as last year a lawyer told me it was v difficult to get an ESTA once you have been rejected. The US embassy however states that once you ve changed status you should be legible...so I am not sure who to trust...any advice and help greatly appreciated, (I ve just landed my dream job and need to travel to the US and cannot currently).
