Marrying my Nigerian UK based bf

Post by Harriet55 » Sun Mar 04, 2018 11:52 am

Hi all

My bf is Nigerian and here on a long stay family visa as his parents and siblings are resident here and now have British passports. Unfortunately, he lost his ILR back in 2011 due to a fraud criminal record.

We met last year and he lives and works here. Are we able to get married on this type of visa? We do eventually want children but not if we can’t get married because that is not how we want to live our lives. I am in fear of him going when his visa runs out in two years :( we are already so close and do everything together.

What 'long stay' visa exactly does he have? What does the visa say specifically??

I strongly suggest that before you take the next step that you ask to see it.

It's unusual. He may have been issued with a 10 year grant of leave under 'Private Life'.

Usually in 99.99% cases the girls/boyfriends know other friend's type of visa & other necessary personal information which can also be asked randomly by HO. I think maybe your boyfriend is not telling you his type of visa/residence. With high respect but Nigerians have no good image in immigration matters.

long stay family visa
There is no such visa category name. He either has Further Leave to Remain or he has a long term visitor visa, they are very different.

How old is your boyfriend?

When did he arrive in the UK?

He is 34 and has been back and forth for years but not been back for like 8 years now I think

He says his visa is up in two years and then it will be extended hopefully and is usually extended every 2, 5 years whatever they decide at the time

How can he have a job with paying tax etc tho? Tho I’ve never seen his workplace

I think I have been majorly lied to

Unless you know exactly what his visa states, any of us will only be guessing.

What date was his last entry to the UK, if you know?

At least two things reveals that he has no settled status and he is not under 18 (so won't qualify for any under 18 priviliges).

There is no room in this forum for this inappropriate, prejudicial blanket statement. Please desist from it.

There are many many decent Nigerians in the UK and overseas whom I have had the pleasure of knowing and meeting. There are honest and law abiding people.

For a seemingly ignorant person like you coming on here and bad mouthing one nationality without any fact, is just ridiculous.

There are bad people in all nationality, but in my experience, they always make a tiny minority.

It is pointless having this debate because in your view Nigerians are always worthy of suspicion. They are guilty before being proven innocent.

@obie:

I just read that one and align it with other frequent news in newspaper and few eye sights and warned the op to first confirm the visa then plan ahead. I personally have no issue with any country and it's nationality including Nigerian. I assure you again that I have no issue with them and you will surprise to listen maybe not believe that one of my close friend is Nigerian called "xxxxx" to who we say 'Obie' as nickname and we friendly talk about immigration and west Africa. My wording was only meant to warn the OP to be careful before placing her trust which although is their personal matter but still falls under immigration.

The name, nickname or friendship with your friend is not significant. What is significant is that you do not generalise or offend anyone, be it Nigerian, Pakistan or anyone for that matter.

From reading your post, it was clear you were not seeking to assist op, but to vilify Nigerian.

Your assumption is incorrect. The whole meaning was to make the op precautious in checking her boyfriend type of visa before placing her trust and plan ahead. Because op herself told that her boyfriend committed a criminal fraud and is blacklisted by immigration authorities.
In my point it's you now igniting this topic for no reason since I have repeatedly clarified you the original meaning.

@ seagul. You need to accept your statement is rude and offensive. I cant understand why you are still allowed to be using the forum when you have breached the guiding rules. Its not a good precedence to the law abiding members. Your defence is afterthought.

You have totally no right to suggest as who should and who shouldn't be allowed to use the board. It's all about the level of mental maturity as how someone interpret the words. I won't now even bother to clarify as what was the actual mean containing the advice solely for OP. Moreover, personally I won't contribute any more single word into that thread where now members start igniting the topic who now wish can continue to misconceive & write here as I m off now from this thread to discourage any further ignition.

I believe we need to put a stop to this now. The point has been made to OP that it is offensive to pick on a particular nationality, and i guess he understands that fact and will not be repeating that again. I believe we must draw a line under this matter and focus on the questions asked by the OP, so that this thread do no go of topic.

Any further comments in relation to this Nigeria issue will be deleted.

Just ask for his honesty when it comes to marriage. If he is ready he needs his passport and proof of address. The registrar form will need to confirm his immigration status so before going ahead just be sure he will be forthcoming so he doesn't get in trouble. If so, HO can investigate the marriage.

Sometimes, he may be keeping something from you just to protect you.

Also, it's not really right that HO give number of months or years when they feel like it, there are rules.

No one can stop you from marrying your boyfriend. Just try to find out from him before registering that all facts are clear for your future's sake.

Husband's timeline - overstayer 11 yrs
08/16 - FLR (FP) Partner, refused 02/18, 03/18 - JR permission refused with merit
08/18 - FLR FP (Partner) PSC - Approved
07/20 - FLR FP to FLR M Switch - Approved, 03/23 FLR M Ext Approved.

I still believe that if he has been issued with a 10 year category visa (2.5 years x 4 ) that this is under the Right to Private Life.
