Working menial jobs while visiting

Post by Kalgan » Mon Mar 05, 2018 9:53 pm

Hi all,

I have a question about working unskilled jobs (bartending, waiting tables, barista, etc) while visiting the UK. I'm a US citizen so I can stay in the UK for up to 6 months without requiring visa. Obviously I need to show documentation upon entering to show funds and intent to leave (ticket out of the UK). However, once entering am I permitted to pick up a menial job to support myself a bit?

Kind regards

No. You are not permitted to undertake ANY form of work while in the UK as a visitor, even unpaid voluntary work.

In any event, no employer is likely to offer you work when they face a £20,000 fine for employing someone who doesn't hold a visa allowing them to work in the UK.

Also, as a non-visa national you will be expected to convince the Immigration Office on entry that you have sufficient funds to support yourself during your visit. If you are unable to do this you could be returned to the USA.

Thank you for your reply. I did think this was the case but I wasn't sure as I couldn't find any supporting evidence, could you link me to document that states this? I finished up 6 years on a Tier 4 visa(s) not to long ago so I'm kind of familiar with the system, currently searching for a Tier 2 sponsored job.
I know for the Tier 4 you need to show enough funds for a given number of months, for a given amount per month. Will I have to show something similar when I enter the UK again? So if I plan on staying for two months, how much money would I need to show I have?
