180 days on the initial visa.

I would say keep it as least as possible and definitely no more than 90 days.

There is no absence limit under the spouse visa category. Although there is a requirement to list absences in a FLR(M) and SET(M) application, providing the relationship is subsisting the spouse is free to travel without restriction during the qualifying period.

Neither is there a '90 day' limit prior to applying for ILR. This is only relevant when applying for British citizenship:
"To satisfy the residence requirement you should not have been absent for more than 90 days in the last 12 months. If you are married to or in a civil partnership with a British citizen the total number of days absence for the whole 3 year period should not exceed 270 or 540 days if applying under the 5 year route."
