I hold a British passport (through naturalisation) and my wife holds an Indian passport (and has a dependent UK visa). We’re planning to have the baby in India.
Having gone through the forum, my understanding is that we have 2 options to get to the UK passport for the child.
A) Apply for Indian passport in India, then apply for the CoE in India, travel to the UK with those documents. Once here in the UK, apply for the UK passport for the child. I believe the Indian leg of the applications i.e. Indian passport + CoE take about 30 – 45 days in total if we apply for the Indian passport via tatkal.
B) Apply for the UK passport in India. I believe this takes about 6 months +/- 3 months depending on how lucky you are.
Could you please?
1) Confirm that my understanding of the routes and timelines stated in A & B above are correct?
2) If we use route A, is the UK passport application once the child is in the UK as straightforward as it is for a child born in the UK? Is the application the same as it is for a child born here in the UK? I.e. this one… (https://www.gov.uk/get-a-child-passport ... d-passport)
3) If we decide to pick route A, besides the extra £400 odd we would need to pay to get the CoE in India, are there are any other short-term or long-term disadvantages for the child in taking this route?
4) Would the child be eligible for OCI? I guess I would need to surrender the Indian passport for my child after getting his/her UK passport if he/ she is eligible for the OCI?
5) My wife is still on her dependent visa and is yet to complete her 5 years to be eligible for ILR. My understanding re. her visa is that in any rolling 12 month period, she cannot be away from the country for more than 180 days to keep the 5 year clock ticking towards the ILR and pregnancy does not count as an exception to that rule. Am I correct?
Could someone help me with these queries?
Many thanks in advance.
