Visitor Visa for Business - Overlapping periods

Hi,

I currently have a UK visitor visa (Business) which is valid until 13th July 2018. From what it looks like, I might have to travel on business for a couple of weeks starting 8th July 2018, which means I will need a visa beyond 13th July. In my new visa application, what should my travel dates be? Can 2 similar visas have overlapping periods? If I give travel dates from 8th July, will the old visa get cancelled automatically? And if the new visa does start from 8th July, will the older visa still be valid until before that, just in case I have to travel earlier than 8th july?

I'd appreciate if anyone can provide clarity around this.
