I am currently under T1e visa， last week hmrc launched vat inspection of my last vat retrurn.Unfortunately vat men found some mistake in my last vat return, I am still waiting for the result.

If hmrc impose a penalty for the mistake in the vat return,will it be a ground for refusal of my ilr? I will complete my 5year route in 2020.

I believe there are differences between a genuine mistake and a pattern of so called mistakes.

However the issue on its own is serious, as this can lead onto a director disqualification, in which case it can break the whole thing for you.

If I were you, my best bet would be seeking for professional advice straight away.

How much that error is for and did they question previous vat returns too?

A penalty on its own is unlikely to cause a problem if you are not taken to court, charged, etc.

Vat men inspected my shop last year and took all the sale invoices. I was running a ebay shop, selling housewholewares, some customers were outside EU while I need to zero VAT. However, the website parcel2go, which I used to send parcels, was not able to generate the custom form that satisfiy HMRC. As a result, I need to pay back the VAT. Fortunately, the tax men allow the penalty to be suspended.

Don’t worry, VAT for EU is not simple most if people make mistakes there, its not an issue at all. They may penalise you but it is usually waived easily. You’ll need to pay just the VAT and interest. It doesn’t effect your immigration history. If the payment amount is big make arrangements with them on monthly basis they never take you to the court if you act responsibly.
