I'm a US citizen who moved to the UK in 2010. My partner is an EU citizen and we got married in February 2014. I got my EEA2 status in April 2014. My understanding is that I can apply for permanent residence (as EEA-PR) in February 2019. However, I have also heard that EU citizens are advised not to apply for permanent residency now as the post-Brexit plans will require the settled status for everyone, regardless of whether they've applied for permanent residence. But I'm uncomfortable with the fact that my EEA2 visa expires only a few weeks after Brexit.
As I see it, I have three options right now:
-Apply to renew my EEA2 now (which I understand is now called EEA-FM), so that I am covered for a longer period while we wait to see what happens with Brexit
-Apply for EEA-PR in February
-Do nothing until the post-Brexit scheme is rolled out
Complicating all of this, I also have travel plans for February and May of next year and I understand that processing time can be up to 6 months, so different plans may require me to cancel one of these trips, as I wouldn't have my passport.
Suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
