Spouce visa - how long can one stay outside UK?

Hi, my friend who is a British citizen has asked me to seek advice from the forum about his wife’s visa. He got married to a non-British citizen and she came here on a spouse visa which was issued in July 08 and is valid for 2 years. Now she wants to visit home for a few months but they are not sure how long maximum can she spend out of the UK without compromising the conditions for indefinite leave.
