Post by manmax » Mon Sep 21, 2009 3:28 pm

Hi all and thanks for your advice and support. I have just been granted ILR after 14 years of being here illegally (i entered legally) .

My application took 11 months

You can imagine how relieved i am now.

Question is: what is the next step? how amd when can i get british citizenship

Thanks and good luck those who are waiting

Since according to your post, your fourteen years here was spent illegally (despite an initial legal entry--what was that for by the way? And for how long?), you must now wait at least five years before you can apply for naturalisation, three if you are married/civilly partnered with a British citizen.

Only time spent in a legal category is counted towards naturalisation.

People who hold ILR prior to July 2011 have until July 2013 to file a naturalisation application (if they qualify to do so) under the current rules. If you are not married to a UK citizen, you will not qualify at the earliest to naturalise until around September 2014. Therefore, you need to be aware that you will be applying for naturalisation subject to the new criteria of the earned citizenship process (e.g., volunteering, mentoring, orientations, good character requirements, etc.).

If you ARE married/civilly partnered to a UK citizen at the time of application, you may apply for citizenship at the earliest in September 2012, which will be under the current rules.

You don't need to take the KOL test again. Without a cystal ball it would be difficult to tell you how long your application would take to process.
However, with the concessions now in place regarding the new regulations, you won't be affected by the changes.

It can be 6 months, or it can be as quick as 4 weeks.
