timelines for applying extension

I am tier 1 visa which is valid till 2012. I just want to know is there any minimum timelines to apply for extension. Please can someone help me on this. Thanks for your help.

As per HO you should apply for your extension 28days before expiry of your visa..

But there are cases approved for those people who applied 3-4months before visa expiry.. this gives chance to re-apply again in case of any worstcase scenerio.. goodluck
