Typo on the marriage certificate

Post by londumpster » Wed Feb 29, 2012 12:25 pm

Hello everybody.

I have a tricky situation here. My marriage certificate has Typo in the section where it mentions my address. They have got 2 characters of my UK post code wrong. Its not very obvious but my guess is that ECO will take a proper look into it.

My wife is about to submit the application soon and the Marriage Register Office in India are not cooperating to make the change.

Anybody got any ideas what to do in this situation. Should I hold off the application until its rectified or go ahead with the application mentioning it in the cover letter.

Thanks.

Regards
Achyut

Hi londumpster

I think it would be hard indeed to get this fixed as I have got the first hand experience with the Marriage Certificate in India this February.

I was told that I need to double check even triple check to make sure all details are correct because once the certificate is produced it cannot be amended. However these are the words from the Clerks in the office who were producing the certificate for the Officer who signs them at the end. The officer who signed my certificate (head and the only one authorised to sign in New Delhi office) was very nice and he even mentioned that my county is near London (which is true). So the officer knew UK geographically as well.

Now the dilemma about the incorrect address:

I am not sure how the ECO actually sees this. If I were you, I would go straight to the officer and request him to amend the details and tell him that it could jeopardise the VISA application otherwise. I think once the signing authority allows the certificate to be amended, it should be a straight forward same day job.

Although a covering letter explaining the situation also seems a good way, I would not risk the application with this and go for the changes in the certificate before applying for the VISA if it can be done in time of course. The last thing you want to avoid is wasting too much time on this causing the other application documents to be outdated.

I have a typo on mine also. Door number of my husband's address is incorrect. I didn't think it would have been issue bearing in mind people may have moved since getting married anyway, but this post has me thinking.
