Self employed and BC

Post by juliajules1979 » Mon Apr 02, 2012 11:03 am

Hiya

I submitted my BC application on the 28/02/2012, I am self employed, but only in the current tax year, so I do not need to submit my tax return until after April 5th 2012. I submitted a letter from HMRC that showed I had registered as self employed on the 18/04/2011 as HO said this was acceptable evidence of my self employed status.

Does anyone have any experience or idea if the caseworker will request to see my self assesment statement of account as I have until January to submit it, and wasnt planning on rushing to do it or will they accept my letter from HMRC that I am self employed and that my affairs are in order?

Many thanks

We didnt have any recent docs to submit as you only receive the requested statement if are required to pay tax and from the 4 years she's been self employed earnings have been below the personal tax allowance except the very first one.

Wasnt asked for anything else in our case.

I do not know if you kept a photocopy of the form AN but if you have got that, if you have a look at that you will see that when you signed the declaration you authorised UKBA to contact HMRC. Accordingly UKBA can, and do, check the applicant's tax records, as held on the HMRC computer system.

Which explains why UKBA require so little supporting documentation when a person applies for Naturalisation. Simply, they can check the record.

Thanks friend in need and John.

I wil be required to pay tax from the 6th April this year, but as my application was submitted before the tax due date I have submitted all information that they required up to that time. If HO check my tax record in say 2 months and see that I havent yet submitted my tax return, will they push for me to submit it or will they realise that I have until January and allow me that grace?

many thanks

As you say you have until January 2013 to submit your 2011-2012 tax return, so UKBA will not have a problem if the return has not been submitted in a couple of months time.

However, there is of course nothing to stop you filing your 2011-2012 tax return in the next month or so, on or after 06.04.12. It will not make any tax payable any earlier.
