visa fee for ILR

I intend to apply for ILR soon, i was wondering if my application is rejected on the basis of being a week or two early, will i have to dish out another 250 pounds.
what are the officials at croydon like. i mean if you got all the documents, is it straight forward process, you give the docs, money,passport and back comes a stamped passport with ILR?
