Visa for non-British Mother in law?

Is there a visa that would let a non-EU citizen come to the UK to help look after the kids? Apart from a visit visa which is only valid for 6 months.

Domestic Worker Visa but you'd need to fulfil the criteria.

That's only valid for 6 months as well, and costs a lot more than a visit visa.

Asking a relative to come to the UK to assist with looking after the kids will likely result on refusal. There are childcare support and government bodies that can help you with these as opposed to asking a family member outside the UK to come here.

They will use that against you and will give that reason for refusal all the time.

Ohh, that's changed - used to be a path to ILR - looks like UKVI closed that door too....

There is no option then, other than Adult dependant visa - but you have to show genuine dependance there, and that they are effectively infirm, which precludes helping with kids. Plus it costs a fortune and almost guaranteed to be denied.

Also a six month visa application will be looked at closely to ascertain if the application is a genuine visitor or unpaid help. Need to tread carefully...

Yes I'm fully aware of the implications and would never give that as a reason for the visit. I guess the best we could do is 6 months then.

Oh and edwinuk, I am also aware of childcare support, however that is not the point. My wife and I don't have any parents over here who could help look after the kids, so we would prefer a family member to help out initially rather than some stranger.

I totally get your point. However, what you need to understand is, European and other culture have differences.

Firstly, where you born in the UK or you migrated here? Whatever reasons you give, if you came to the UK and became citizen or got a visa to indefinitely stay here, you need to look at it from their perspective. You are both adults and asking someone to come over to help you look after your children only gives them the reason to doubt the application. How can you support or sponsor someone if you can't even look after your own?

Again, I totally see where you are coming from i.e. family helping family etc. but remember, you are both adults and you can't or shouldn't rely on a family abroad to sort your problems in the UK and or if help is available here, why get someone outside the UK? This is similar to student visas. One of the requirements are that they need STRONG proof that education you are seeking in the UK isn't available in your home country else you are denied.

Please do not take this as if I am trying to tell you that you do not have any other options, but the saying about "Less is more" holds true on these instances. I highly recommend that you do not mention or at least give them reasons to think that the only reason your relatives are coming over is to look after your kids.

Besides, having no other relatives here isn't really a strong reason why they should approve the visa. If that is the case, then everyone will be bringing their whole family over.
