Visa question

I have a trip planned for Germany. After booking non refundable tickets i found out that i can only stay n germany for 90 days. I booked my flight for about two weeks more then i am allowed to stay. what is the penalty for over staying your visa in germany? Will i have a problem getting back to the US?

It sounds like a trip outside the Schengen area will be needed. Maybe a weekend in the UK, or Switzerland?
