What should I (EEA citizen) do in order to move to the UK?

Hi everyone,

I'm a EEA citizen (Germany) and currently live in Germany. What should I do in order to move to the UK? I'm not planning to work for any UK company. I'd like to move there as a self-sufficient person. I have enough money in bank.

Should I apply for any kind of residence permit before I'm allowed to move to the UK for permanent residence? If yes, how?

An EEA national has to ensure they do not become a burden on the resource of the host member state for the duration of their proposed stay until the right of Permanent Residence is acquired.

The Host memberstate may refuse entry or residence if the personal conduct of the EEA citizen is such that, a restrictive measure of that sort, is justified.

So as I understand, I can just come to the UK and stay there as long as I have my German passport and EHIC. I don't need to apply for any kind of residence permit.

I have one more question: I'm planning to come to the UK with my husband (yes, I'm a girl even if it's not very clear from my name). He has Turkish citizenship and will stay in the UK as my family member. Our goal is to get him a work permit for the UK. I'm a self-sufficient person and have enough money to cover living costs of 2 people. My question is, what should we apply for, so that my husband can not just live in the UK, but also work there?

P.S. Does he need a health insurance? If yes, where can he get it?

You husband will need EEA family permit.

Both you and he will need Comprehensive Sickness Insurance (i.e. private health insurance) for the period that you intend to exercise treaty rights as a self-sufficient person.

I believe EHIC cards are only acceptable for the purpose of exercising treaty rights if your stay is intended to be time-limited, such as in the case of students.

Obie, could her husband not apply for a Residence Card directly? I presume that her husband currently already resides with the OP in Germany.

A person cannot apply for residence card from outside UK.

Apologies. I was not aware of that.

But I presume that the husband could travel with his German wife without a Family Permit and then apply for a residence Card from within the UK directly. Am I correct?

I guess we'll need to do the following:
1) My husband (Turkish citizen & resident) will apply for EEA family permit.
2) Once he gets an approval (or whatever they give to the applicants), we'll come to the UK.

P.S. By the way, EEA family permit form asks how long we're planning to stay in the UK. Is it a good idea to say truth (like 10 years) or be humble and say that we're planning to stay less than 6 months?

Yes dependent family members of self-sufficient persons need CSI.

Shop around on google or search in the forum for CSI providers & policies other members may have.

Two more questions:
1. Seems like we can't get a CSI for my husband since he is not a resident of any EEA country. Instead, we managed to get him a travel insurance from AOK (German company). It covers 45 days anytime during the year. We can get him a CSI once we are in the UK but will travel insurance be enough for him to get a EEA Family permit?
2. To be on the safe side, I'd like to be a qualified person based on 2 conditions - self-sufficient person AND job seeker. Any idea what is a minimum number of job application forms, letters of invite to interviews, and rejection letters from employers I need to show in order to be considered as a job seeker?

And two more question:
3. How should we inform UK Consulate about my situation as a job seeker in the application of my husband? Where exactly should we write that I’m searching for a job to be a qualified person in the UK.
4. We have more than 5,000 pages of the Google Hangouts records (conversations with my husband). It's simply not possible to print them all and bring 5kg of paper to the interview What should we do?
