when is the latest time for me to make application.

I am in the process of extending my visa which is expired on 24 Feb 2016. My employer said my case is not urgent for UKBA to consider now as I am still within the '3 months before' the expiry date to make application.

My question is whether there is a rule saying when is the latest time I must make my application.. I need to know when should I chase my employer to chase UKBA for the COS, so that I can make my application within a 'safe period of time'.

Pls advise.

Safe period - anytime you wish before the expiry of current leave.
Point of no return (latest) time limit - within 28 days after expiry of your current leave.

although you can apply for visa anytime you want, 1 month or 1 year before expiry of your visa.
Obviously, closer to the expiry date you apply, the longer visa u will get (as stated on cos).
even if your employer wants to assign you cos closer to your expiry date, they could make sure they have allocation of cos with them. if they have allocated cos, then nothing to worry about, they can assign you cos in 15 min whenever they want. However, if they do not have urgent allocation, they need to request it now.

My Tier 2 visa is expiring on 28.02.16, when is the earliest I can apply for the extension.

I am working in the same job with the same employer so could you please advise what documents do I need to send with my application form thanks.
