Wife on Benefits

Post by mikehudson » Fri Dec 28, 2012 9:50 am

Hi there,

If my wife is claiming housing benefits and is working a part time job, will that disqualifies her from sponsoring me?

Is claiming any kind of beneift an automatic dis-qualifier?

Thanks,

Mike

Under the new rules your wife has to be earning a minimum of £18,600 per year, or have at least £16,000 in savings to make up the shortfall.

Hi Casa,

I have the money in savings, enough to make up for the shortfall. However, is it a problem for her to be claiming benefits? Will that prevent her from sponsoring me?

No. But... it might cause UKBA to look more closely at whether your sponsor has enough resources to support you. It will then be up to you both to demonstrate how you will achieve this.

Just to be clear on the savings - it's not 16,000 you need - it's AT LEAST 16,000.

The formula is - 16000 + (shortfall * 2.5) - so if your wife has NO income - then it's £62,500.

If you have more than 16'000 in savings then Im pretty sure this alone will affect your wife's benefits, as you would be included in the means test, unless your wife has forgot to mention she is married and her husband has a large sum of money in the bank.
Although if you wife is receiving certain types of benefits this may not be the case.

If your wife is receiving government assistance while her husband is having savings greater than 16'000 then you may be in a spot of bother.

What visa are you currently on, Im thinking you are in the UK, although that may not be the case.
