Worth to give up Malaysian passport for Netherland citizensh

Hi all,

Just found this website, & this is my 1st post, hope can get an answer from someone here.

I am a Malaysian girl married with a Dutch guy, stayed in Netherlands for 5 years now, i have a job (yes i paying tax too!) and i have pass the NT2 exam (as per the gorv here request) and applying for citizenship at the moment.

But i am always doubtful if my decision is correct, and not sure if Malaysia allow dual nationality? coz as i know it is not allow to have dual citizenship, but the person in city hall here (Netherlands) told me that i can still hold my Malaysian passport after get my Dutch Passport, because i am married to a native Dutch guy, is that true?

I am not very sure that the advise given to you is accurate. I ran a couple of searches on google and all the links said that Malaysia does not allow dual citizenship. If they do come to know about it, then the Malaysian citizenship will be revoked.

I would advise you to contact the local Malaysian embassy in Netherland and ask for advise. They will be able to tell you about their currently policy on dual citizenship.

The netherlands is one of the countries where you have to renounce any previous citizenship to become dutch unless you're married to a dutch citizen.

Can you keep your original nationality when you become a Dutch national?

A person who wants to become a Dutch national must give up his original nationality. Some exceptions are made, depending, amongst other things, on the country of origin and the personal circumstances. Foreign nationals, for example, are not required to give up their present nationality if:

they are married to a Dutch national or are the registered partner of a Dutch national they are a recognised refugee in the Netherlands, the Netherlands Antilles or Arubathe legislation of the country of origin prohibits this



So you CAN have dutch dual citizenship if your spouse is dutch . I suspect the advice you have been given simply means that the dutch authorities would allow you to have dual nationality but really it is up to your current country of citizenship to also allow it ( malaysia) and the dutch authorities can't really do much about that.

Guess i will just keep it as long as possible then...

But do you all think Malaysian citizenship worth to keep? Nothing against being a Malaysian, but we all living abroad already.
