Would like to move to america temporarily

Post by Bren86 » Sat Aug 04, 2007 8:05 pm

Hi I'm a 21 years old male living in the UK. I would like to move to america but I am not classed as a professional worker. Could I move to america temporarily for a change of scenery and new life style by temporarily I mean like 2 or 3 years. Is this possible for me.

Could I fly to america then look for work while I'm there or do I need an american job sorted before I fly over. I'm not sure what type of work I can apply for being unprofessional though, any ideas.

Thanks

:)

First things first. I assume you are a British Citizen and don't have a US passport or green card.
1. Search this board - there have been a few people asking about how to immigrate (short term or long term) to the US.
2. Visit the US embassy in the UK website and read up on immigration/visa issues there
3. Visit the state.gov website and read all about immigration/visa issues there. Here's the link for your benefit http://travel.state.gov/visa/visa_1750.html
4. Realise that there is little chance of you, at 21, being able to get a job there, since you probably don't have much work experience (and only a bachelor's?), so don't get too excited about it. If you're not a professional then there's little chance of you being able to secure a work permit or visa. America has too many 22-year-old college graduates to need to bring in more people with little skills (and let's face it, a degree is good but doesn't carry the punch of having relevant work experience). So unless you can build Transformer-like robots in 24 hours, you won't be able to get a visa
5. Try searching something like BUNAC or some similar organisation that allows you to work there for a short while (like 6 months...not 3 years but you don't have much choice)
6. Look for other options - why not study there? PhDs, in some good universities/departments, can be fully funded; if not, try the Fullbright Commission for information on scholarships. This isn't a route to a work permit but you can at least experience life in the US (with little financial burdens if you obtain a scholarship).

Now, I mean to be nice in all this  so don't think I'm being mean! But unfortunately too many 21/22 year olds think it's easy when it isn't. Unless you get a job as an economist or something, or have close relatives over there, the US authorities won't want to pass you a visa.

If you're British, why not try the EU/EEA, or Canada, Australia or NZ (on a Working Holiday Maker visa)? America's just too hard, IMO.

Nope. You have already asked this question in the past, and the answer hasn't changed.
