YMV to pre-settled status to settled status to citizenship

Post by justanotherchilli » Sat May 25, 2019 11:15 am

Hi all,

I'd like to know if anyone has arrived in the UK on the Youth Mobility Visa (YMV) and then become a British Citizen via the EU route (for those with EU family members).

It's common knowledge that the pathway from YMV -> Tier 2 (general) -> ILR -> British Citizen doesn't allow for the inclusion of the 2 years spent in the UK under YMV as a qualifying period for an application for ILR.

However, I can't find anything on the HMRC website to indicate that YMV -> EU settled status/permanent residency -> British Citizenship cannot include the 2 years spend under a YMV.

Does anyone know the answer to this? I arrived in June 2016 with my Irish partner (now husband) and currently have pre-settled status as we've only been here for 3 years, but would I be able to apply for settled status in 2021 and then British Citizenship in 2022? I know we don't really know how immigration rules will change in these uncertain times, but I'd like to know what the situation is currently.

Looking forward to a discussion!

Your time on YMV won't count for Settled Status, if that is your question. Also see this thread.

You will be eligible to apply for Settled Status after five years of either residence in the UK as the spouse of your Irish husband or after having been issued a Residence Card as the unmarried partner of an Irish citizen, whichever was first.

Any children born to you and your Irish spouse in the UK will be British citizens automatically at birth as Irish citizens are considered settled on arrival in the UK.
