IRL away from UK. Returning Resident Visa?

Post by britprinsg » Sun Aug 17, 2014 3:58 pm

My son and I hold IRL status but we are now currently living in Singapore due to son's national service commitment. We are going home to UK for a 9 days home leave after 15 months of absence and returning to Singapore for son to complete his remaining 9 months of his military service. I would like to know if going back home to UK for this 9 days home leave will break up, or so to speak, "wipe the slate clean" of the IRL's away for more than 2 years policy.
Will we be allowed to return home again after 2 years without applying Returning Resident visas?

Thanks.

You should be returning to settle, 9 days is unlikely to show that.

Will return to settle permanently only after son's 2 years of national service.

I have lived and worked in London for more than 11 years before coming back to Singapore' for son's national service. Husband and daughter are living in London.

Reckon I will need to apply for Returning Resident visas then ... Lol

Yes you will need to apply for Returning Resident visas unfortunately as brief visits don't qualify. Here's the link (although the requirements may change before the time you are ready to apply).

Hopefully the fee remains unchanged .... it's costly :)

A Returning residence visa may be unnecessary if you are not using a new passport nor haven't been absent from the UK for more than two years.

I believe their time scale takes them well over the 2 year period Vinny.

They are initially returning after an absence of 15 months?

I think Casa is referring to them coming back 2 years after the 9 days return.

Oh, I was assuming that they will be returning again soon after their son completes his remaining 9 months of his military service?

ya.. after 15 months in Singapore, going back to London for 9 days holiday
then flying back to Singapore again to spend another 9 more months before going home for good.

I believe we won't encounter too much of a problems with UK Border this coming home trip
but I will apply for the Returning Resident visas for the next trip.

Amber's right about how I'd read it. I didn't add up the total though and looking at it now, 15 + 9 = 24. In which case you may just make it before the 24 month mark.

We actually plan to return London the day after he completes his military service. But, by looking at it, we are slightly over the IRL's away for more than two years policy unless the 9 days holiday home leave is taken into consideration.

Just to add that it is crucial that you are not admitted as visitors at any time.
