Don't have first hand experience in Spain and Portugal, but it worked fine for my partner in other countries and it should be the same there.

Having said that I did email the Spanish and Portuguese embassies a few times as we were planning on going there on holidays and I like to be 100% sure, but they never bothered replying ...
So we thought talk to them and we went to spend our money in the countries which did reply our emails (we got positive answers and did enter with no problem in Sweden, Denmark, France, Italy, Hungary, Belgium ... and the German embassy said a visa is required which I think is wrong but with no official confirmation we went to Hungary instead, which was pretty nice :-)).

If you manage to get a clear confirmation from them do post it here :-)

thanks for the info .. i have gone through some info on this website and i believe that it should be fine to travel to Portugal as long as you are with your EU spouse here is a link of it from 2010

This is the reply i got from Spanish embassy Dublin

(response from Spanish embassy Dublin)

EU family members holding a valid 4EUFam Residence Card will be exempt from the visa requirement to enter Spain providing they accompany or join the EU citizen. Please refer to Spanish legislation: http://www.boe.es/boe/dias/2009/07/23/p ... -12207.pdf and to European Directive 2004/38EC.

If they do not hold a 4EUFam Residence Card, they need to apply for a visa. Application of EU citizens family members will be processed with due priority.

Requirements to apply for a family reunification visa:

Application form
1passport photograph
Irish residence card*
Marriage certificate*
EU spouse’s passport*
Proof that the EU citizen is travelling with the applicant : Accommodation and flight tickets

* Originals and copies of these documents are required
