Bank statements for B1/B2

Hello

I am an Indian, currently in the UK on a Tier 2 visa. I am going to India for a couple of weeks to visit family and thought it would be a good chance to apply for a US tourist visa (harder to apply from the UK in terms of taking an extra day off and travelling to London etc).

I know bank statements are a required document to carry for the interview, but I was wondering how often they actually ask to see them? Everyone I know who's applied for a B1/B2 says that they were never asked for them.

Any replies would be appreciated!
