I'm a professional dominatrix. Can I naturalise?

Hello everyone, I am a professional dominatrix in England. I have ILR which I got via marriage - I arrived here in 11/2005 to marry my husband and we divorced in May 2010. I got ILR in 2008. Can I naturalise as a UK citizen?

I am registered with HMRC as a professional dominatrix - this is my full time job and I work, legally, for myself in my own home. Am I going to pass the good character requirement?

I am not interested in hiding my job as I am registered for tax for it and I write a column in the Guardian about it. Besides it would be dishonest.

I am very pleased to use a solicitor if necessary, but would appreciate a referral to one who is familiar with my specialised concerns.

Sincere thanks for a great forum.

This is one of the best questions I've seen on here.

Honestly, I really hope that they wouldn't have an issue with it. The good character requirements seem to be related to criminal activities and arrests, and I'm hoping that since you've been paying your taxes and hopefully don't have a criminal record or are involved in terrorist organizations, it won't be an issue.

Although who really knows what the caseworker assigned to your case would think. I wish I had more information to give you, but as long as what you're doing isn't illegal, I don't see why there should be a problem.

I think as a professional dominatrix you should be demanding them to naturalise you!

So long as you're not running a brothel you should be fine.

I don't think they'll have any issues with you being a professional dominatrix as long as you operate within legal boundaries. However your association with The Guardian might trigger red flags ;-)

Nowhere in the citizenship application form do they ask you about your employment. So you dont have to lie, you simply dont have to mention anything. They dont want to know if you are employed or unemployed.

Good character requirement - this is with respect to criminal activities, taxes, police records etc.

As long as you can provide referees I dont think this should be a problem. All the best.

Ummm, yes, the form does ask about employment (page 10) and it would be a false statement if an applicant says they are unemployed when in fact they are employed and have the relevant tax numbers etc.

However, being in employment is not a requirement for naturalisation.

This is very heartening advice, thank you! I am still interested in finding a solicitor to use so I can address a few questions. I am also interested to know what the financial requirements are. Also my fiance and I (he is British) are engaged to be married on July 19; with respect to my citizenship application would it be advantageous to wait until after our marriage, with respect to financial requirements etc?

I have never claimed a day of benefits and the only money the country has ever spent on me is the removal of an ovarian cyst in 2006.

I am also phoning round councils to make sure I don't owe them any money and so on, and it will be great to find an experienced solicitor who knows how to present my application in its best light.

There is no requirement to be employed if applying as a spouse of BC.

I don't think you have anything to worry about.

If it puts your mind at rest using a solicitor, I would recommend Laura Devine.

I don't usually do solicitor recommendations on here, but this is the type of firm that will tell you that you don't need their services! Friends have been very happy with them.

I don't know if you have ever watched Border Force, but there was one passenger who gained entry as a visitor despite the slave contract in his bag!

I already got ILR as a function of being married to my Scottish ex husband. I will be applyingfor citizenship in my own right but my application might look stronger, I thought, if I waited until after the wedding?

thanks for the lawyer rec! I will so totally call her.
