I'm a British citizen, my wife is Chilean. We have been living in Chile for the past few years. Our second child was born here in Chile in March this year. I want to get a UK passport for her. I have a few questions:

Firstly, can I apply for a UK passport for her without registering her birth with the UK authorities? It says here that "you can still apply for a UK passport for your child even if you don’t register the birth in the UK".

Secondly, is my daughter automatically a 'British citizen by descent'? Or do I need to do something to apply - in particular do I need to use form MN1 "application to register child under 18 as British citizen"?

On the online passport form, there is a question which is "Was the applicant a British national at birth?" - would the answer to this be "no" for my daughter?

If a parent was British otherwise than by descent when child was born, then child is automatically British.

Thank you. I have one further question. I am now filling in the passport application form for my daughter, and I can't make head nor tail of part of the 'document checklist'. It says:

Parents' documents, provide the following:
...

• If applicant born or adopted outside the UK - parents' or adoptive parents' documents
  • The passport you entered the country from which you are applying or any non-British passport held.
    If the birth certificate you provide has not been issued by a British Embassy, High Commission or
    Consulate showing parents' details, also please provide:
    • If born on or after 1 January 1983, also please provide:
      • One of your parents' full birth certificate (showing both the child's and parents' details)
        or naturalisation or registration certificate; and
      • If this is your father, his marriage certificate to your mother (this does not apply for those
        born on or after 1 July 2006).

My difficulty in understanding this is that they don't make it clear if they are referring to me (the parent) or my daughter.

So for example, where it says:

"If born on or after 1 January 1983, also please provide" are they talking about me the parent being born after 1983, or my daughter?

My guess is that I need to provide my passport ("the passport you entered the country from which you are applying") and in addition to my daughter's (Chilean) birth certificate (with translation) my own birth certificate. Since my daughter is born after 1 July 2006 I don't need my marriage certificate?

Although you are filling in the form for your daughter's passport, the applicant is your daughter as she is applying for the passport. So, I would construe references to "you" and "your" as referring to the daughter, not yourself (as the father).
