First your friend is an illegal entrant, that means 10 years ban. His/her time will only start from the date when he/she was granted leave to remain in UK. So count 10 years form the day he/she got the permission to live in UK. So if your friend applied in 2004 & it took six years means he/she was given leave to remain in 2010. Start counting time from 2010, and if all goes well & good your friend should be eligible to apply for citizenship around 2020.

here you can follow link AMBER explained about illegal entry if Home office known your date of entry so your ban should be up to 2009 as here said ,or when you came attention to HO I mean you applied in 2004 or 2005 for leave from that day they know you came here illegally.this is best explanation of 9.5 and 9.7 as under link given(perfectly explained)
