Self-employment question

Hi,
I am applying for citezenship for my brother in law and he has been in self-emplpyment for around 4-5 months. When looking at the checklist, it says the following - Mr X most recent tax year account statement and corresponding HMRC tax return as proof of self-employment.
He hasn't worked long enough to provide this, is there a way around this ? Can I proivde something else?
Any help would be appreciated.
