ILE absence

Hi

If a person has ILE, and they have been out of the UK for over 2 years, is the ILE still valid?

A friend has told me that if the absence from UK is 2 years and above, then the ILE is invalidated and they have to apply for a visa to get back in the UK! But I have searched for a couple of days now and I cannot find anywhere that states as such. Is this true and if so where is the document that states this? Just to confirm my question is about ILE not ILR.

Many thanks in advance.

After initial entry, I believe that ILE is equivalent to ILR. Holders may be subject to the returning residents rules.
