Then the dependent will have to pay the surcharge covering the period of the extension applied for.

Well, I think its double dipping. Working migrants pay National Insurance which is mainly to fund NHS, so are they planning to reduce share of NI for working migrants who pay 100's of pound in NI every month?

This is ridiculous!!!!!

I think it's good idea, there is a huge strain on the NHS now due to immigration, health tourism etc, only fair that migrants should top up their shortfall, I've been paying into the system for what, nearly 40 years now, the system can't cope with people not making whole life contributions.

While attempting to remain neutral (which some may call 'sitting on the fence'), Wanderer is making the point that British born residents are legally required to pay towards the NHS for all of their working lives, which as he says, in most cases is 40+ years. Temporary migrants (who are affected by the surcharge) may only contribute to 5 years or so, while still having access to all the NHS facilities. I think few would doubt that the NHS is struggling financially at present, even though it's considered to be amongst the best in the world.
