Self sufficient successed stories

Ppl with experience with self sufficient can we share our stories here . As we know is not that straight farward cases
on the basis this pertains to the UK
I guess the first question is 'what is the amount required for self sufficient & from what sources can it be', or does it have to be?
- Can it be capital only, if so - how much?
- If it has to be income, does anyone know (is there a government document) to what is classified as 'sources of income' & how much. Is it earned or from investments, or pension income?
- Do welfare/benefit income meet this criteria?
