Can a residence card of a family member of a Union citizen issued in Spain be used to move to any other EEA state to live and work? Or would the card holder have to apply for a visa/permit in other states? Particularly interested in knowing if it can be used for these purposes in the UK.

An Article 10/20 card should get the holder through the door.

Thanks. Any idea what happens once the holder is in the door? What conditions/restrictions/requirements/benfits apply? Can the holder work, access NHS, social security.....? How long can the holder stay? Where is the official guidance for the public on this?

Noajthan, can you clarify if such residence card can be used to travel only if accompanying the EEA spouse or does it allow travel independently of the EEA spouse?

Once in the UK, and assuming that you are a direct family member and your EEA relative is accompanying you, you can exercise all benefits you are entitled to. I believe that you will also need to apply for a UK Residence Card once you move to the UK (i.e. the Spanish residence card can be used to travel to the UK, but does not confer any additional benefits within the UK).

This is not about settlement. Not at this stage of the game.

The card holder has to come with or join their EEA sponsor who is either settled or (going to be) exercising treaty rights in UK (within 3 months).

To get up to speed start with forum FAQS at top of this sub-forum page.

Then browse through this - it reflects current state of play:

Note all bets may be off if DC pushes his ambitious changes through Europe (or we Brexit).

Thanks guys, much appreciated.

Another question: can an EEA family permit holder stay in the UK for 6 months even if they stated in their application that they intended to stay for just a few weeks? Or is it rigid and the holder can only stay for the duration specified on their application?

The UK application form for this card asks if the applicant has held one of these cards with biometric features before. Does having one issued in another country help or hinder? How much so? Can biometric be just a photo?

And no snide Brexit comments thank you! :P
