I know an EEA national who is self-sufficient has to show proof of Comprehensive Sickness Insurance (CSI) for the time they are in the UK.

If their normal CSI only covers them when in the UK, but they went on a short holiday out of the UK, would UKBA require them to prove they also had CSI that also covered them abroad in the other country?

Would not think so.

The whole point of CSI is not to become a burden on the UK health system. Now, if you become a burden on another country health system, that's OK (as long as your CSI covers you if you get sick abroad and need a follow-up treatment in the UK).

What kind of CSI do you have for the self-sufficient?

I think the self-sufficient got private CSI from an insurance company called WPA that they had seen recommended on here.

How long is a piece of string? (Every piece of string is not the same length.)

What I mean by that is it can be a different price for each applicant based on their age and medical history etc - and level of cover.


You need to get an individual quote from the insurance companies.

Find health insurance websites easily by search engine.

I think it was the cheapest they found at the time.

Most european union citizens have European Health insurance anyway, which permits them to access health care in another memberstate when they are on short visit or Holiday.

It is arguable and possible, that an EEA national will be required to show they hold a CSI 6 months in every year, during their residence in the UK, for there not to be a break in the continuity of their residence.

The whole point of having a CSI is not ensure that people don't become an unreasonable burden to a state during their period of residence. If an EEA national can show that they were not an unreasonable burden during their period of residence over the 5 years they stayed in the host state, it will be unreasonable to refuse them a PR on that basis. Such decision will not be considered to be proportionate and compatible with community law.

The CSI is not an ends to itself, their is a for purpose. That pupose is best established at the time of initial application for residence card or registration certificate and not 5 years after. If a person can show they have not been an unreasonable burden, then they will have a very strong case.
