From all the posts I have seen in this forum, I get the impression that postal applications have a much quicker turnaround than NCS in general. Any idea why that is?

No you have got the wrong idea. I don't know where you got this idea from but check the September timeline dashboard and you'll see it for yourself. It doesn't matter how you make an application. Technically if NCS is used, it shouldn't cause further delays as they check the application before sending it. HO does not prioritise the application based on how the application was received.
