Tier 2 rejected due to incorrect photograph

Hi Guys,
Need urgent help..
My friend recently applied for Tier 2 (extension) via post in start of August. He received a letter saying application has been accepted. From August start til today he didn't receive any correspondence.
Now today from no where he is has received a letter from Home Office that they have been trying to get in contact via post saying his photograph dimensions were incorrect and sent a letter on 18 August (which he didn't receive). Now the letter says that the application has been rejected and he needs to leave the country.
Also he got a letter from Home Office Liverpool for getting his passport back and detainment (for 17-09-2015).

What should he do?
