Nobody knows how the cases are dealt with.
i think it just depends on your caseworker, and their mood on day to day as to how efficient they wish to be!

UPDATE!!

I received all of my documents today as well as an approval letter!! I wasn't expecting it at all.
I applied on the very first day of June. In fact, I sent my documents to the Home Office on the Friday or Saturday before the 01/06, so I could also be classified as an end of May applicant, I suppose.

The letter says that you need to wait for a separate invitation to attend a citizenship ceremony, and you should get it within 2 weeks in the post, so I'll update when I have more information.

I recieved acknowledgement by Email on 17 june 2015 than recieved a letter on 02nd of july 2015 from home office dated 14 June 2015 saying they have received my application but fee payment slip was not enclosed & requested to send new payment slip within 14 days of the date at the letter ( received already 04 05 days late as letter was dated 14 june 2015 & I received on 2nd of July 2015).
I posted ( Royal Mail Signed For ) new payment slip to home office on 03rd of July with covering letter explaing why late to reply as I received their letter late & enclosed prove ( NCS receipt ) that my payment slip was attached with application.
Looks like Home office accepted my explanation, as Money was detected on 07th of july 2015 from my account & I received bio metrics letter on 09th of July 2015 dated 07th of july 2015. Bio Metrics done on 13 July 2015. Home office working on June 2015 applications let's hope for the best.

Nobody told me anything. Fact: a lot of people in May, and some people in early June, have been approved. Simple logic suggests that people in April/March who have not been approved yet are probably undergoing further checks.

I may be wrong, I may be right. Aragon asked for an opinion, I suggested my version. Hence the word "likely" that I used.

You have to remember that only about 1% of all applicants are represented on the spreadsheet. We don't really know why some undecided applicants cluster the way they are. It may be because, as you suggested, they are decided in batches by more/less efficient caseworkers. Or it may be a purely random phenomenon. Or perhaps a lot of people simply did not update the spreadsheet even after obtaining their decision. There is simply too little information to claim whether this is fair or not.
