Passport application from within UK for newborn abroad?

Post by gre.bm691 » Wed Feb 24, 2016 5:53 pm

Dear all

I am a naturalized citizen and wife is on Spouse visa. We had our child in India this month.

Prior to making the decision of having the child here or there, we had consulted this very useful forum and also a solicitor as we didnt want to wait for 6-12months in order to bring the child into the country.

The solicitor suggested that I could apply for the British passport for the newborn from within the UK. I have now returned with all the documents he had asked for and will be proceeding with this application soon. But before I proceeded, I wondered if there is anyone who had taken or know about this route?

My plan of action is to apply for the passport from within the UK (solicitor was assuring that he has recently done this for a client and it took around a month for him to get the passport) and in case of an unsuccessful attempt, will pursuit the RoA option.

Any advice will be greatly appreciated.

Don't know why you think you need a solicitor to do a simple passport application which can be done within a week using fast track.

I don't think I made it clear or perhaps there is lack in my knowledge.
The situation is the child was born and is in India. I am planning to apply for his UK passport from the UK rather than from India.
If this route is as straight forward as you say CR001, why would anyone apply for the British passport for a newborn from India where it takes 4-10months to get it?
If what you mentioned still holds good, could you advice on the fast track route?

The website doesn't offer clarification on my case. Could you please break it down for me by answering the following questions:
1. Can I apply for the child's passport from within the UK while the child is born (Indian birth certificate) and living in India?

2. If so, why do people apply from India and suffer upto 12 months months of agony?

Hi

I am in a similar situation as you are.

1. fast track application is less than 3 weeks
2. it is unclear if you could use the indian birth certificate as a proof of child's birth.
however, there is a mechanism to "email register" your child's birth - which might be one way of ensuring an acceptable form of documentation.

all the best in any case - as the passport application within uk is surely a very easy / straightforward process ..any probably not too cost / time intensive ...when compared to the indian routes of (a) indian passport+roa and/or (b) applying passport from india.

a general rule of thumb would be to state the facts and figures as they are instead of "masking" any information like with all application.

Cheers buddy.

Can you tell me more about the email registration of the child birth? Is this the birth registration thingy? I have read it that its not required for the child attaining citizenship through descent.

What route are you going for? I hope you get yours soon too.

please read this link
<https://www.gov.uk/register-a-birth>

it clearly states
You can still apply for a UK passport for your child even if you don’t register the birth in the UK.
you could now - go ahead and register the birth (which might come handy later on during school / et al) and maybe in general a good practice.

I was planning to do that after the passport process as suggested by the website.

I might do this first now. Thanks.
